About Geoffrey
Walker
Welcome to GJW Music! I am a
composer and keyboard player from Scotland who is now based in
Yorkshire in the UK and this site is about my music. There are
some other things too, but, in conjunction with my homepage at Sibelius
Music it will focus on my recent and future compositions along with news
about performances, recordings, broadcasts and publications.
You can also find out how to get me to
compose music especially for you!
I studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama,
won a scholarship to King's College
Cambridge, and gained a Master's degree in jazz and composition from Edinburgh University. I also have a
diploma in piano performance and have worked as a classical and jazz
violinist.
I've always enjoyed writing for the
stage, but I didn't see my future as a theatre or media composer, and
moved into hi-tech business for many years. I maintained my performing
interests by leading the Cambridge
Philharmonic Orchestra and directing the Cambridge
Sinfonietta while putting composition on hold. I have now resumed
composing and have completed my second commission for the Absolute Zero Viola
Quartet.
The Absolute Zero Viola Quartet (a
professional ensemble who met in the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra) have
released their first CD 'Easier Than it Sounds'. This is a treasure
house of the viola quartet repertoire, and the first viola quartet album ever
released. I am proud that they chose my 'Absolute Zero Rag' as the
title track. You can find out more about this distinguished group and how to
purchase the CD at their
website
I recently completed a commission for a
25 minute score to accompany the meditational labyrinth at the the Crossover Youth Festival. This was
a particularly interesting project as I provided the music in the form of mp3
files, rather than an orchestral score.
I am also working my way through several
smaller commissions.
